Overview

Integrating climate change into sustainable development: the role of higher education institutions and research centres

An International conference organized by Sudan International University (SIU) with local and International Partners
Location: Conference Hall, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Khartoum
Format: hybrid conference, with in-person meeting and via Zoom video. The main medium of the conference is the English language but Arabic translation will be provided.

27 September 2022

Climate Change (CC) is one of the most serious problems facing sustainable development (SD) around the world and in Africa particularly. Although developing countries are the least responsible for the phenomenon, they are the most affected by its impacts and vulnerabilities. The impacts of CC could wipe out the progress made in achieving the goals of sustainable development. It has been predicted that land temperature in Africa will rise faster than the global average. The impacts of CC will accentuate the already existing development problems and severe social vulnerabilities in African countries and put the lives of millions of people at risk.

The implementation of international climate agreements by low-income countries and their efforts for transition into low-carbon societies, can result in major disruptions in the development efforts of these countries.

Integration of CC adaptation and mitigation actions into comprehensive SD strategies is essential for effective combating of CC. This meeting will therefore highlight the relationship between CC and SD and explore practical modalities and good practices for mainstreaming climate policy actions into national plans for SD.

The conference will consider how CC policies can be pursued in a manner which is beneficial for social and economic development.

This is the first conference organised by Sudan International University (SIU) with WASD with its various partners in Africa as part of the series aims is to ensure that all individuals and groups are involved in all the development strategies and policies that will help and ensure all African countries, after many years seriously off-track from all international development goals and targets to achieve the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development (SD) and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as Climate Change.

Theme

There is an increasing empirical evidence that the climate in Sudan and Africa continuously changing. We have strong belief that the Sudanese and African Societies life style and ways of production have substantial negative impact on the climate which inevitably affects productivity, health and peace situations. Sudan International University SIU has come up with a conference that enhances the role of educational institutions and research centers to create awareness and to provide research-oriented solutions for the impact of climate change. The conference is a joint work between SIU, Association of African Universities AAU, World Association for Sustainable Development WASD and UNESCO chair for school health.

The conference will be organized around four main themes; each has a plenary session

  • Climate Change: the concepts, causes and general effects.
  • Climate Change in Africa (Sudan) and the governmental roles.
  • National and International Efforts at combating the effect of climate change.
  • Role of universities in climate change mitigation adaptation.
Publications

We are aiming to produce the following publications from the conference:

  • Peer reviewed proceedings of the conference, incorporating relevant comments and feedback.
  • Recommendations for Policy.
